Phyllis Jean Wells

Phyllis Jean Wells, age 85, of Janesville, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 after a brief illness at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

Phyllis was born on July 21, 1932, in Newark Township, Rock County, the daughter of Chester and Anne (Wilken) Halom. She grew up in Newark Township and attended the one-room Grove School. She graduated from Orfordville High School in 1949.

She was employed in the accounting office at General Motors Fisher Body Division for several years. She married Jerry Wells on September 18, 1954. After their daughter Pam began school, Phyllis worked for many years as the accountant and office manager at the family business, Wells Motors.

Phyllis was a 63-year member of First Lutheran Church. She loved to play bridge, but her real passion was golf. She was a longtime member of the Tuesday Morning Women’s Golf League at Riverside Golf Course and enjoyed playing tournaments with her good friend, Audrey McNatt, as well as playing golf with her daughter, Pam. She especially looked forward to annual golf outings at Eagle Ridge in Galena, Ill.

Survivors include her husband; daughter Pam Wells of Janesville; a sister, Shirley (Al) Schulze of Beloit; a brother, Rev. Richard (Diane) Halom of Stoughton; a brother-in-law, Wiley Kessinger of Janesville; plus nieces and nephews, Dale (Sonja) Kessinger, Nancy Zarnstorff, Kay (Mark) Fosler, Cindy (Randy) Sorenson, Martin (Melinda) Halom, and her special friends, Audrey McNatt and Lori Wetzel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Maxine Kessinger, nephew Randy Kessinger and niece Gail Kessinger-Steinke.

Funeral services will be at noon on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Avenue, Janesville. Rev. Mae Jean Zelle and Rev. James Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church Foundation, First Tee of South Central Wisconsin, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. The Wells family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home.
